Tips for Keeping Holiday Spending Under Control

Onarga Lending Staff 001By Domi Garcia

It’s no secret that the holidays can be a budget-buster.  Even those who are disciplined with money throughout the rest of the year can find that the emotions and the advertising get to them.  Those who may have already strayed from the budget might just decide to throw it out altogether.  Whichever category you fall in, don’t let yourself be taken in.  These easy tips can help you to weather the holidays without going into debt.

Set an Overall Budget

As with most worthy goals, controlling holiday spending starts with actually setting a specific goal.  Think of your budget as the target you are aiming for.  Setting a reasonable amount to spend is the first step.  Look at your annual budget if you have one and decide what you can afford.  Once you determine this number, you can list out who you want to buy for and how to divide your overall budget.  As you begin spending, you should track your actual expenditures compared to your budget.

Pare Down Your List

When you begin making specific plans about how much you will spend, you may find that you just don’t have enough money in the budget to go around.  One effective ways to solve this problem is to pare down your list.  You may have people on your list just because you bought for them last year.  Evaluate your list by considering each person and whether they still belong on your list.  Talk to friends or family if you want to change a gift exchange tradition.  They may be thinking the same thing!

Let Your Style Show with Homemade Gifts

Once you have a list of people to buy for, the next step is to choose the actual gifts.  If your budget is tight, you might want to consider giving some homemade gifts.  In addition to saving you money, these gifts can also be extra-special to your family and friends.  Homemade gifts are often one-of-a-kind and can be personalized to appeal to the individual.  Plus, you may really enjoy spending time baking, knitting, crafting, or assembling much more than standing in line or fighting with the crowds.  There are many ideas for creativehomemade, and inexpensive gifts on the web.

Give the Gift of Yourself

Finally, in a similar vein to the homemade gift idea, think about how you can give yourself, your time, and your skills.  Often we look down on what we have to offer, but the truth is that everyone has so much to give without spending a dime.  Do you have a lonely family member that would jump at your invitation for dinner?  Could you encourage friends by offering to watch the kids while they enjoyed a quiet evening?  Can you offer your skills to help a loved one finish a project that has been difficult to complete?  Be willing to give of yourself and you may find that it turns out to be the best gift ever.

Sticking to your holiday budget is not easy but with a little bit of attention and creativity, you can do it!  Being financially responsible will make your holidays more enjoyable and less stressful.  Then when your January credit card bills come, you will still be smiling.
