Growing Use of Mobile Apps

Federated Bank and many other businesses are offering apps for activities like mobile banking, ordering dinner, and shopping. As more and more of us rely on our mobile devices for these routine tasks, it is extremely important that we exercise certain measures to protect devices from online threats. According to The American Bankers Association (ABA), mobile usage has grown tremendously in recent years, and consumers are using their phones to access and transmit very sensitive information. For this reason, it is extremely important that consumers avoid doing their banking and shopping on unsecure networks to limit their exposure to online threats. At Federated Bank, we take mobile banking security seriously. That is why our mobile banking app offers numerous security features.

Improve Your Mobile Security

In addition to the security features included in our mobile banking app, we wanted to share some general tips that you could use to improve security while using mobile banking or other mobile apps. Here are 10 tips suggested by the ABA to help safeguard data, protect your mobile device, and improve your mobile banking experience.

  1. Use the passcode lock on your smartphone and other devices. This will make it more difficult for thieves to access your information if your device is lost or stolen.
  2. Log out completely when you finish a mobile banking session.
  3. Protect your phone from viruses, malicious software, or malware, just like you do for your computer by installing mobile security software.
  4. Download the updates for your phone and mobile apps.
  5. Beware of apps that ask for unnecessary “permissions.”
  6. Avoid storing sensitive information like passwords or a social security number on your mobile device.
  7. Tell your financial institution immediately if you change your phone number or lose your mobile device.
  8. Be aware of shoulder surfers. The most basic form of information theft is observation so be aware of your surroundings, especially when you’re punching in sensitive information.
  9. Wipe your mobile device before you donate, sell, or trade it by using specialized software or using the manufacturer’s recommended technique. Remember also that some mobile operating systems allow you to wipe your device remotely if it is lost or stolen.
  10. Beware of mobile phishing. Avoid opening links and attachments in emails and texts, especially from senders you don’t know.
