About Federated Bank

Our History

The Federated Bank, formerly known as Onarga State Bank, received authority from the State of Illinois Auditor’s Office to begin business on January 30, 1918. James Kewley, Wilbur Kerns, and Henry Knoche organized the bank with capital stock of $100,000, divided into 10,000 shares at $100 each.

James Kewley served as the first President. Wilbur Kerns served as the first Cashier. After Mr. Kewley’s death in 1926, Mr. Kerns became President and Otto Maddin became Cashier. Later that year, Mr. Kerns transferred ownership to G.B. Egley, who became President.

In 1983, Onarga State Bank changed its name to Federated Bank of Onarga. In 1985, the bank purchased the Bank of Chebanse in Chebanse, Illinois, and unified both under the name Federated Bank. That same year, state and FDIC approval allowed the bank to open a facility in Loda, Illinois. In 1997, Federated Bank received approval to open a facility in Bradley, Illinois.

The bank remained open during the economic challenges of the 1930s and 1940s. It reopened quickly after the national banking moratorium, which strengthened its reputation and supported strong growth. The bank has never caused a loss to depositors and has never required concessions from the government to remain open. During World War II, the bank exceeded the Onarga Township quota in the sixth war bond drive. The U.S. Treasury recognized this effort. The main office continues to operate from its original location in Onarga, Illinois.
