Everyone looks forward to spring. It feels so good to see the last of the snow disappear and feel the warmer breezes. And for farmers, spring means the beginning of a new season, another round of planting. But for those of us in rural communities, whether farmers or not, it is wise to exercise extra caution during spring planting season. In an effort to encourage our neighbors to be safe, here are some timely reminders.
Respect Heavy Equipment. Farm machinery is large and powerful, which enables the efficient cultivation of the land. However, this also means that there is an inherent danger in these implements. Machinery with this kind of power must be treated with respect. Farmers should be sure that their implements are in good working order, and those of us who encounter them on the road or in the field should keep a safe and watchful distance.
Show Patience. We are all in a hurry these days. Whether you are trying to get your soybeans in the ground or get to your next appointment, you are probably in a rush. But during the planting season, it is particularly important to show patience. When working on the farm, rushing can make you careless, especially when you are tired. Slowing down to make sure that things are done properly can go a long way to protect you from mistakes and accidents. Similarly, drivers that are sharing the road with farm implements must display patience. Before passing machinery, you should assess the situation and be sure that you have taken into account the speed and direction of the implement as well as the oncoming traffic.
Obey the Laws. Laws have been put into place to protect us, but they can’t protect us if we don’t obey them. As we enter the spring planting season, it might be worthwhile to review the rules of the road as they pertain to farm implements. Farmers should pay special attention to the requirements for keeping vehicles properly lit when driving before sunrise or after sunset.
Check…and Check Again. Finally, at this time of year, it never hurts to double-check when safety is an issue. Taking the time to check and re-check that your tractor is fully functional or that your passing lane is clear is worth the extra time it may take. In the end, your safety and the safety of those around you is priceless and taking a second look may just prevent an accident.
