Halloween can be a lot of fun. Candy, costumes, and staying out past dark. What more could any kid ask for? But as adults we know that even on a night that is meant to be filled with good friends and happy times, it is still necessary to use common sense and caution. Here are a few tips to help you keep yourself and your kids safe this Halloween:
- Make Yourself Visible to Drivers. It is always important when you are out at night to make sure that drivers can see you. Wearing reflective tape and carrying a flashlight can both help make you more visible in the dark.
- Never Trick-or-Treat Alone. Be sure that you always go out with a trustworthy group or a responsible adult. Stick together as a group and look out for one another.
- Be Careful When Crossing the Street. Walkers should cross the street only at designated crosswalks if possible.
- Always Walk on Sidewalks. Don’t walk through yards where you might trip over unseen obstacles. More importantly, stay out of roadways.
- Examine Food Before Eating. Make sure that treats have not been tampered with prior to eating. Pre-packaged foods are the safest. Only eat homemade treats from people you know and trust.
- Do Not Enter Homes. Stay outside when trick-or-treating.
- Wear Well-Fitting Costumes. Masks should allow for clear sight, and costumes should be of an appropriate length to avoid falls.
- Never Accept a Car Ride from a Stranger.
- Take Care Around Open Flames. Keep a safe distance from jack-o-lanterns, luminaries, or candles, especially when wearing long or draping costumes.
- Trust Your Instincts. If something doesn’t seem right, then it probably isn’t. Always listen to that little voice that tells you to get out of what may be a dangerous situation.
It’s a good idea to go over these rules with your children before trick-or-treating begins. Having a clear plan in place will go a long way to ensuring your family has a safe and enjoyable Halloween night.
